According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), heart disease remains the number one killer of men and women in the U.S. For many, however, the risk of heart disease can be lessened by following a healthier lifestyle. That's why MidState offers a variety of heart health programs designed to help you learn more about healthy diets, regular exercise, stress management, medications and more. Patients who are recovering from a heart attack can also benefit from our cardiac rehabilitation services.
Prevention and Wellness Classes
Choosing a healthy lifestyle can help you reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, or minimize its damage. Healthy lifestyles include eating a heart healthy diet, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, controlling your cholesterol, knowing your cardiac medications, and minimizing stress. You can learn more about each of the factors that affect your lifestyle by attending our Healthy Lifestyle classes.
People who are recovering from a heart attack, coronary bypass surgery, angioplasty or other heart conditions can benefit from a cardiac rehabilitation program. Research has shown that exercise improves cardiac patients' quality of life, both mentally and physically.
A monitored exercise program should begin four to six weeks after you leave the hospital. This consists of a registered nurse watching what your heart is doing on a monitor and checking your blood pressure while you exercise. You will come to our program and exercise three times per week. During this phase, which usually lasts for two or three months, you are also educated about your heart disease risk factors and how to make lifestyle changes to prevent any future cardiac events.
The registered nurses at MidState will guide and support you during this stressful time. Your physician will be updated on your progress and direct your care. If you would like to participate in MidState's cardiac rehabilitation program, please discuss it with your physician at your follow-up office visit. We look forward to working with you in promoting a heart healthy lifestyle.
Our sessions are held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
