Programs and Services

True to its holistic approach in treating body, mind and spirit, MidState offers cancer patients access to several integrative therapies that positively impact well-being and are likely a large contributor to a patient’s recovery.

MidState’s integrative therapies include the following:

Art Therapy
Led by a certified art therapist, this is offered the first and third Tuesday evenings of the month to help people touched by cancer find strength and hope through creative expression. A variety of art mediums are used. No artistic skill is necessary, only a desire to participate.

Music Therapy
Music has been shown to benefit cancer patients and survivors in profound ways, reducing stress and providing a welcomed distraction. The Cancer Center has introduced its meditative CD, Circle of Healing: Music for Body, Mind and Spirit, which includes seven tracks of peaceful music and one track of guided meditation led by oncology social worker, Diane Lafferty. If you’d like a copy, please email DGagne@midstatemedical.org to request your copy today.

Chair Yoga
The gentlest form of yoga, chair yoga focuses on breathing, stretching and flexibility to help cancer survivors, and many others suffering from chronic illness, regain strength and confidence.

Guided Meditation/Relaxation Response
Practicing meditation has shown to have both psychological and physical benefits, reducing stress and enhancing well-being, as well as lowering heart rate and blood pressure.

Healthy Steps
An effective therapeutic program of exercise and movement to music for anyone who has experienced breast cancer, other cancers or chronic illnesses. Designed to help women experience total body movement and ease adjustment to a new body image.

Journaling
A non-threatening way for cancer patients to explore their feelings and identify worries, making it easier to cope and gain perspective.

Reiki
A Japanese technique for relaxation and stress reduction used to relieve pain and muscle tension and heighten a sense of well-being. Reiki works on the body's energy field to release blocked energy, creating a state of balance and activating the body's natural ability to heal itself.

Soft Touch
Soothing relation rubs by certified massage therapists aid the body's healing process by increasing circulation, relieving anxiety, and increasing the release of endorphins. These soft touch relaxation rubs are given to the hands and feet.

Pet Therapy
Certified pet therapy dogs provide comfort and joy to hospital patients during their stay. Pet therapy is effective in relieving anxiety and providing patients (who may have their own pets) with a familiar reminder of home.
