Are you over 40 and have:

  • Continuing or increasing shortness of breath
  • Shortness of breath when walking up stairs or inclines
  • Chronic cough or mucus production
  • A drop in activity level or ability to do routine things you used to do
  • A history of smoking
  • Genetic factors as well as exposure to material at work or in the home may also play a role in COPD: (As many as one out of every six Americans with COPD has never smoked.)

How do you know if you have COPD?

Ask your doctor if you should have a simple screening test called Spirometry (spi·rom·e·try). This test measures how well you can push air out of your lungs and pull it back into your lungs. The test will be looked at by a Pulmonologist (a lung doctor) who will determine if you have COPD and also how severe or mild it is. The test can also be repeated after we give you a medicine which will help us to know if you have Asthma or COPD. The test only takes about 30 minutes to do.

Now what?

Breathe easy:

Please contact your physician if you have any of the risk factors to discuss and schedule a Pulmonary Function Test in our Pulmonary Laboratory at MidState Medical Center. We schedule patients from 8:30- 4:30pm Monday through Friday.
