Abdominal Surgery

The stomach and the colon or large intestine are the primary focus of abdominal surgery. Colon resections as well as sigmoid, descending and transverse colostomies are a specialty of SURGICAL SPECIALISTS surgeons. Other areas of expertise include cutting edge laparoscopic techniques for the surgical treatment of reflux disease and gallbladder disease, as well as the most advanced surgical procedures for stomach cancer.

Breast & Glandular Surgery

SURGICAL SPECIALISTS surgeons recognize that breast problems can be frightening to patients. We specialize in providing sensitive personal care in the diagnosis and treatment of breast conditions. SURGICAL SPECIALISTS uses the most advanced diagnostic techniques and procedures, including stereotactic breast biopsy and sentinel node mapping. We also offer a complete range of the most sophisticated breast surgery options from lumpectomy through modified radical mastectomy with a strong emphasis on breast conservation as well as the emotional well being of the patient. Breast reconstruction surgery is also available.

Oncologic Surgery

The diagnosis and optimal treatment of cancer requires the expertise of many specialty health care professionals. SURGICAL SPECIALISTS work closely with the expert team at the MidState's Cancer Care Partnership to review cases and develop state of the art treatment plans. Patients and their families are considered part of the treatment team.

SURGICAL SPECIALISTS have expertise in skin, breast, colon and lung cancer as well as many other abdominal or soft tissue cancers. We work closely with medical and radiation oncologists to assure our patients cutting edge therapy, proven results, and a patient focused approach that supports healing.

Laparoscopic Surgery

The first to offer laparoscopic surgery at MidState Medical Center, SURGICAL SPECIALISTS are committed to staying on the cutting edge of this new technology. Laparoscopy is a technique that allows for surgery in the abdominal cavity with the assistance of a laparoscope. The laparoscope is a thin telescope-like tube, which allows the surgeon to view the internal abdominal area on a monitor. The advantages of this procedure include:

  • Less pain and discomfort
  • A shorter hospital stay
  • An earlier return to normal activities
  • Smaller incisions
  • Less visible scarring
  • Increased safety in very ill patients

Laparoscopy is often used to repair inguinal hernias, correct abnormal reflux of gastric acids into the esophagus (GERD), for the diagnosis and treatment of acute appendicitis and gallbladder disease and many disorders of the pelvis and female reproductive organs.

Vascular Surgery

Vascular surgery encompasses the treatment of diseases of the blood vessels in all areas but the heart. Artery problems of the lower extremities include occlusions, or blockages within the arteries, and aneurysm, or a ballooning of the artery caused by the weakening of the arterial wall.

SURGICAL SPECIALISTS surgeons routinely treat peripheral artery disease, occlusions and aneurysms in the lower extremities and abdomen, cartoid artery problems and create hemodialysis access for patients with kidney failure. They also treat abnormalities of the veins such as varicose and spider veins, deep vein thrombosis and chronic venous insufficiency.

General Surgery

General surgery involves the skill and ability to care for many different surgical problems. A general surgeon has completed 5 to 6 years of extensive residency training beyond medical school. Common surgeries performed by a general surgeon include gallbladder surgery, surgery for appendicitis and hernia repair. SURGICAL SPECIALISTS surgeons are experienced with both open and laparoscopic techniques.
